Goal
Find the linear mass density of a string
Procedure
1. Set up the lab with the string attached to the oscillator on one end and the other end on a wheel attached to the end of the table where the string is hanging off the side with mass attached
2. Measure distance from oscillator to wheel
3.Find fundamental frequency of the string
2. Measure distance from oscillator to wheel
3.Find fundamental frequency of the string
Analyzing and Conclusion
We now have everything to find the linear mass density of the string.
We have values for wavelength, frequency, and our tension force. This allows us to solve for velocity. We can then reconfigure the equation with mu and force tension t the form seen at the bottom. Once solved we find linear mass density of the string is 0.00347kg/m
Uncertainty
The biggest source of uncertainty in this lab was choosing the fundamental frequency. We chose it based on what we observed but it was possible that we were off by a small margin but once that is used to calculate the velocity and then the velocity is squared that could result in a fairly significant amount of uncertainty.
