Wave Investigations
Mechanical waves can be in two different forms
|
Wave Speed
Wave speed is dependent on the medium the wave is traveling through not its energy or other factors. Its speed is constant
Wave Velocity=Wavelength/Period but changing either of these values only changes the other value not velocity.

Wave Properties
The above video covers the properties of waves
Superposition of Waves
Waves move through each other and interfere with each other
- Destructive interference
- Waves are not phase so they work against each other and cancel each other out
- Constructive interference
- Wave are in phase and add their amplitudes
Medium Boundaries
What are the edges of the waves medium and what do they mean
- Both ends open
- Antinode on each end
- One end open, one end fixed
- Antinode on one end
- Node on one end
- Both ends closed
- Nodes on both ends
Standing Waves
Standing waves are waves that appear to stand still but are actually made up of waves that are reflecting off the medium boundaries and interfering with each other
Harmonics are integers of the fundamental frequency
- They consist
- nodes
- areas that dont move
- antinodes
- areas that do move
Harmonics are integers of the fundamental frequency
In the video above at the start the first harmonic or fundamental frequency can be seen and later in the video the second harmonic can be seen
Speed of Standing wave
The speed of a standing wave is determined by the equation v=Square Root(Force tension of the string/linear density of string)
